Dig Day

We dug up existing flowers and roots from beds 1, 2 & 3, and the raised herb bed.  Vines growing along fence line had roots up to 4" in diameter.

Whatever plants remain will sprout for two more weeks, then we will clear again prior to planting seedlings.

Decades-old vines and intrusive plants hacked out and pulled up.

Thousands of plants moved out to make way for new.

Main vegetable bed stripped clean - for now.  We'll see what else pops up in the next two weeks.

Continuous lattice will run down fence to support climbing tomatoes, beans, and peas.

Raised bed prepped for new plants - chive plant left in place.  This former sand-box drains well and will be home to herbs, peppers, and flowers.  The bed beyond will grow spinach, broccoli, and pac choi.  Blueberries, squash, and cucumbers will climb a lattice fixed to the fence.

Flowers loaded up for a short move one mile north.

Displaced plants were transplanted into beds at a church yard, Evanston's Infant Welfare Society, and the yards of four residents.
