asbury organic gardens 1104 asbury ave · evanston il
This garden plan incorporates about 300 plants of 80 varieties that will produce fruits and vegetables for eating, flowers for cutting, and herbs for cooking, teas, and medicinal uses. The plan uses the permaculture design method, utilizing existing conditions, micro-climates, and soil cultures to reduce the use of pesticides, fertilizers, and water. It will also provide a habitat for a multitude of animals - microbes, beneficial insects, birds, etc. More information on permaculture design can be found here. Most plants will be grown from seed and transplanted into beds per the plan. Beds will be mulched to retain water, control weeds, and cool soil temperatures. Plant varieties are mixed to create diverse plant guilds where one plant type benefits the others in the guild. Seeds will be supplied by johnny's selected seeds, a high quality organic seed source.
rainwater harvesting Utilizing captured rainwater will provide multiple benefits, including recharging groundwater supply, reduced municipal water usage and diversion of water from the foundation and storm sewer. Approximately 935 gallons of water are directed from the roof to the southwest downspout for every inch of rain that falls. calc: 1500ft2 · 1in · (1ft/12in) · 7.48gal/ft3 = 935 gallons Options to redirect and retain this water will be explored.
